3 Signs Your Car Needs Suspension Service

Your vehicle’s suspension system plays a major role in ride comfort, handling, braking stability, and steering response. It helps keep your tires planted on the road and absorbs the impacts from potholes, uneven pavement, and rough winter roads. Because suspension components are constantly under stress, wear can happen gradually over time without drivers noticing right away. If your car is pulling to one side or you hear clunking noises, that might just mean your suspension is in need of a check-up. Here are some signs that your suspension needs professional attention, from the team at Lexus Downtown in Toronto, Ontario.

How to Know When It’s Time for a Wheel Alignment

1. Your Car Pulls to One Side, Drifts, or Feels Unstable

A vehicle that pulls left or right on a straight, level road, or that wanders and requires constant steering correction to stay on course, is a vehicle with a problem that deserves prompt attention. While this symptom is sometimes attributed to tire pressure or wheel alignment alone, it's frequently a sign that a suspension component is failing.

Worn ball joints, deteriorated control arm bushings, or a damaged tie rod can all cause the front wheels to shift out of their intended geometry. This produces a pull that steering corrections only temporarily mask. The deeper issue is that driving on a compromised suspension puts additional stress on every connected component. What begins as a minor pull can progress to accelerated tire wear, reduced braking effectiveness, and eventually a loss of steering control.

2. You're Hearing Clunking, Knocking, or Squeaking Over Bumps

Your suspension system is designed to absorb road impacts quietly and efficiently. When it starts making noise, it's telling you that something has worn out, loosened, or failed.

Clunking or knocking sounds when you drive over a speed bump, pothole, or rough pavement are among the most common early warning signs of suspension trouble. These sounds typically come from worn or failing shock absorbers, struts, sway bar links, or ball joints. When these components lose their structural integrity, it creates metal-to-metal contact that produces a distinctive impact noise.

Squeaking over bumps often points to worn bushings. The rubber or polyurethane sleeves cushion suspension joints and isolate noise and vibration. As they dry out and deteriorate, they allow more movement than intended and produce squealing or creaking sounds on uneven surfaces.

3. Your Ride Is Excessively Bouncy

A well-functioning suspension absorbs road impacts cleanly and returns the vehicle to a stable, level position quickly. When shocks and struts wear out, they lose their ability to control that rebound, and you can feel it.

If your vehicle continues to bounce noticeably after hitting a bump rather than settling immediately, that's a clear sign the shock absorbers are no longer doing their job.

A quick test: Press firmly down on the front or rear bumper of your parked vehicle and release. If the car bounces more than once before settling, the shocks or struts are worn and need attention.
